A New Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Method Accounting for Discrete and Continuous Variables under Aleatory and Epistemic Uncertainties

چکیده
Various uncertainties are inevitable in complex engineered systems and must be carefully treated in design activities. Reliability-Based Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RBMDO) has been receiving increasing attention in the past decades to facilitate designing fully coupled systems but also achieving a desired reliability considering uncertainty. In this paper, a new formulation of multidisciplinary design optimization, namely RFCDV (random/fuzzy/continuous/discrete variables) Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (RFCDV-MDO), is developed within the framework of Sequential Optimization and Reliability Assessment (SORA) to deal with multidisciplinary design problems in which both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties are present. In addition, a hybrid discrete-continuous algorithm is put forth to efficiently solve problems where both discrete and continuous design variables exist. The effectiveness and computational efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated via a mathematical problem and a pressure vessel design problem.

Design Optimization With Discrete and Continuous Variables of Aleatory and Epistemic Uncertainties
Reliability based design optimization has received increasing attention for satisfying high requirements on reliability and safety in structure design. However, in practical engineering design, there are both continuous and discrete design variables. Moreover, both aleatory uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty may associate with design variables. This paper proposes the formulation of random/f...
متن کاملA Spatial-Random-Process Based Multidisciplinary System Uncertainty Propagation Approach with Model Uncertainty
The performance of a multidisciplinary system is inevitably affected by various sources of uncertainties, usually categorized as aleatory (e.g. input variability) or epistemic (e.g. model uncertainty) uncertainty. In the framework of design under uncertainty, all sources of uncertainties should be aggregated to assess the uncertainty of system quantities of interest (QOIs). In a multidisciplina...
متن کاملDISCRETE SIZE AND DISCRETE-CONTINUOUS CONFIGURATION OPTIMIZATION METHODS FOR TRUSS STRUCTURES USING THE HARMONY SEARCH ALGORITHM
Many methods have been developed for structural size and configuration optimization in which cross-sectional areas are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. This paper proposes two efficient structural optimization methods based on the harmony search (HS) heuristic algorithm that treat both discret...
متن کاملMixed Aleatory/Epistemic Uncertainty Quantification for Hypersonic Flows via Gradient-Based Optimization and Surrogate Models
The use of optimization for the propagation of mixed epistemic/aleatory uncertainties is demonstrated within the context of hypersonic flows. Specifically, this work focuses on strategies applicable for models where input parameters can be divided into a set of variables containing only aleatory uncertainties and a set with epistemic uncertainties. With the input parameters divided in this way,...
متن کاملInclusion of Aleatory and Epistemic Uncertainty in Design Optimization
1. Abstract This paper presents a design optimization methodology under three sources of uncertainty: physical variability (aleatory); data uncertainty (epistemic) due to sparse or imprecise data; and model uncertainty (epistemic) due to modeling errors/approximations. A likelihood-based method is use to fuse multiple formats of information, and a non-parametric probability density function (PD...
